Coron, Palawan

Friday, March 21, 2008

Last weekend, I had the chance to see the very beautiful town of Coron in Palawan. I can say it is really a very, VERY beautiful place. I encourage everyone to come and visit Coron while it is not yet exploited by investors planning to turn it into another Boracay soon.

Together with the islands of Busuanga, Culion and Linapacan, Coron is included in the Calamianes Archipelago. It is found at the southeastern tip of Busuanga Island. By sea, Puerto Princesa is a good 14 hours away.

We rode the Superferry 19, Our Lady of Good Voyage (fare is P2,100 roundtrip) and arrived at the Coron Pier about 12 hours later.

There were some choices for places to stay: SeaDive Resort, Darayonan, and Village Lodge. We opted to stay at the Village Lodge (and we did not regret it)!
After checking in at The Village Lodge (2-thumbs-up accommodation!), we then went to the town market to meet our boatmen. Our island hopping started with Siete Pecados, named so because of the 7 small islands in the area. There are a lot of corals there and very nice and colorful fishes. Though one must be careful because sea urchins abound. I got stung once, good thing it did not itch much. Entrance fee is P50/head.

After about an hour of snorkeling, off we went to Kayangan Lake (picture above). Entrance fee is P150. The lake is being managed by the indigenous Tagbanuas, and the fee goes to the maintenance of the lake. It is the best lake I've seen so far, and the best place I saw in Coron! The water is a mix of blue and green. It is like looking at a painting. I've never seen a place as beautiful as that one. Expect 20 to 30-minute trek to the lake. But it is surely worth it!!

We had lunch in one of the islands of Coron. Our boatmen grilled our lunch for us. Then we went to Twin Lagoon but we failed to cross to the other side because of the high tide. If we had been luckier and arrived during low tide, we can easily cross the meter-long hole because they said the view and water at the other side is much prettier. Got its name because there are actually two lagoons separated by a wall of rock.

Our last stop was the Maquinit Hot Springs (P100/head entrance fee). Going to the water initially is difficult because of the very hot temperature (38 to 42 degrees Celsius). But once the body gets used to the warmth of the water, it is truly relaxing and therapeutical. Best way to end a tiring day of island hopping.

Day 2 was just spent relaxing, discovering the town and climbing Mt. Tapyas where the big cross one can see when approaching Coron is located. I was able to ascend a third of the climb and just contented myself with the beautiful pictures my friend took.

I am sure there is so much of Coron to see. There are many islands to discover and beaches to laze around. Next time we visit, we are planning to go to Malcapuya and Banana Islands, Culion Island and the Calauit Island where the Calauit Game Preserve & Wildlife Sanctuary is located.

Over Boracay, I will choose Coron over and over again. Go find out yourself and you will not prove me wrong.

  4. Hi! The entrance fee you paid was cheaper than its standard rate (siete pecados = 75/person, kayangan = 200/person, rates are posted there).

Is it a local rate? Or just negotiated rate?

By the way, I put up groups on those who want to visit coron cheaply. Viewers of this post might want to visit Coron. Here's a helpful site > http://diycoron.wordpress.com

  8. Lets hope that plans of making Coron a mining town instead of focusing on tourism would not push through.
